IV curve tracing

Measure what each string and module can really deliver. An IV curve tracer sweeps a string or module from short-circuit to open-circuit and records current against voltage. The curve shows maximum power, mismatch, shading effects and failing cells in one picture.

When you need it
  • Output is lower than a neighbouring plant of the same size
  • String currents differ more than expected
  • You need numbers for a warranty claim
  • After cleaning or repairs, to confirm the fix
Benefits
  • Finds weak strings without opening the plant to guesswork
  • Separates module faults from wiring and shading problems
  • Gives measured evidence you can show a manufacturer or lender
The process

How we do it, step by step.

Plan the sample

Choose representative strings and modules with you, covering each inverter and each block.

Measure on site

Trace curves with irradiance and module temperature logged at the same moment.

Correct to standard conditions

Convert readings to standard test conditions so strings can be compared fairly.

Compare and flag

Compare against the datasheet and against peer strings, then flag outliers.

Outcomes you can expect
  • A ranked list of strings and modules that fall short
  • An estimate of the power gap per string, labelled as measured or estimated
  • Clear next tests, such as thermal imaging or EL, where the curve points to a cause

Outcomes depend on what the inspection finds. Possibilities are labelled as such in every report.

What you receive
  • Curve plots for each tested string
  • Table of corrected power against expected power
  • Mismatch and outlier list with photos

Instruments: IV curve tracer, reference cell or irradiance meter, module temperature probe
